World-conqueror Alexander was resting. An officer came and presented him a box studded with priceless gems and said that it had been brought from the royal palace of Iran. He also requested that you keep your most favorite thing in it so that its memory remains forever.
A friend of Alexander present there suggested that you keep in it your gold plated sword with the help of which you conquered the world. Alexander said with a heavy heart – I have shed the blood of innumerable people with this sword. How can I consider this a matter of pride for myself?

Another friend present there proposed that you keep the keys of your treasure in it. Rejecting this proposal, Alexander said – I have a lot of wealth obtained through looting in my treasury. How can I be proud of such wealth? After that, after thinking something, Alexander said – I have received the inspiration for good thoughts from the epic poem Iliad written by the great poet Homer. This great book has made me aware of my sins and inspired me to repent for them. Therefore, I will adorn this precious box with this priceless book.
Our young readers should understand the value of good scriptures in life. The history of the development of Greek civilization, culture and consciousness is found in two epics written by Homer – Iliad and Odyssey. In Greece, Iliad and Odissi have the same importance as Valmiki’s Ramayana and Vyas’s Mahabharata have in India. A comprehensive history of the development of Indian culture is preserved in these two texts. These books have brought miraculous changes in the lives of countless people in Europe and India respectively. These texts provide powerful inspiration to live the present sincerely in the context of the past and build a bright future with enthusiasm. If our budding citizens follow any of these books, they will never feel disappointment and inaction in life.

His life story had inspired many youths to sacrifice everything for their country. After reading ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ written by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, many women came out of the four walls of their homes to participate in India’s freedom struggle.
Many prisoners of war of the Second World War, after coming out of jails or forced labor camps, told that they had spent their days of loneliness and suffering with the help of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. He somehow kept a small-sized book of Geeta with him, and whenever he got an opportunity, he used to read it in solitude to gain mental peace and spiritual strength.
People like Solomon and Alexander, after achieving everything in life, were forced to atone for the sins they had committed only after reading the scriptures. We want our young men and women to study and meditate on the best texts. Through this, they will not only get new information, they will also get inspiration to make their life optimistic and they will get disgusted in their mind towards the method of achieving success by copying, adopting the path of corruption etc., adopting unfair means and ultimately they will get rid of unrighteousness. It is only there.
H.W. has said something very important in this context. Grost (H. W. Grost) said that good books provide protection from sin (In good books is one of the best safeguards from evil). You read the best books and assimilate the knowledge available in them, the path to success will be paved in front of you. Also, this belief will be firmly established in your mind that the best objective can be achieved only through the best means and it is permanent. Then you will not need to repent in life like Alexander. You should imbibe the statement of Martin Farquhar Tupper – A good book is the best of friends, the same today and forever. That is, a good book is the best friend, a good book today and a good book forever.
Keep this general rule in mind when choosing – Never read a book that is not an year old. Never read a book that is not at least a year old

Whatever information we get, whatever our knowledge increases, everything is done through books. The need is that we should choose good books and like Alexander the Great, consider books as a better thing than all the wealth. Voltaire, while narrating his life experiences, once said that “except the uncivilized nations, the rest of the world is ruled by books.” This means that good books are a proof of the civilized society and a person who has respect for good books is considered civilized in the true sense. The victory of iron made Alexander the world conqueror and the greatest jewel in the jewel-studded casket.
विश्व-विजयी सिकन्दर विश्राम कर रहा था. एक अधिकारी ने आकर अमूल्य रत्नों से जड़ी हुई एक पेटी उसे भेंट की और कहा कि यह ईरान के राजमहल से लाई गई है. उसने यह भी निवेदन किया कि आप इसमें अपनी सबसे प्रिय वस्तु रखें जिससे इसकी याद हमेशा बनी रहे.
वहाँ उपस्थित सिकन्दर के एक मित्र ने सुझाव दिया कि आप इसमें अपनी स्वर्ण मण्डित वह तलवार रखें जिसके बल पर आपने विश्व-विजय प्राप्त की है. सिकन्दर ने भारी मन से कहा-मैंने इस तलवार से असंख्य लोगों का खून बहाया है. मैं इसे अपने लिए गौरव की वस्तु कैसे मान सकता हूँ ?

वहाँ उपस्थित अन्य मित्र ने प्रस्तावित किया आप इसमें अपने खजाने की चाबियाँ रखें. सिकन्दर ने इस प्रस्ताव को नकारते हुए कहा – मेरे खजाने में लूटपाट से मिली सम्पदा का बाहुल्य है. ऐसी दौलत पर मैं कैसे गर्व कर सकता हूँ ? तदुपरान्त कुछ सोचते हुए सिकन्दर ने कहा- सद्विचारों की प्रेरणा मुझे महाकवि होमर प्रणीत महाकाव्य इलियड से प्राप्त हुई है. इस महान् ग्रन्थ ने मुझे पापों का ज्ञान कराया है और उनके लिए प्रायश्चित की प्रेरणा प्रदान की है. अतः, इस बहुमूल्य पेटी को मैं इस अमूल्य ग्रन्थ द्वारा सुशोभित करूँगा.
हमारे युवा पाठकों को समझ लेना चाहिए कि सद्ग्रन्थों का जीवन में क्या मूल्य होता है ! यूनानी की सभ्यता संस्कृति एवं चेतना – विकास का इतिहास होमर कृत दो महाकाव्यों-इलियड और ओडसी में मिलता है. यूनान में इलियड और ओडसी का वही महत्व है जो भारत में वाल्मीकि कृत रामायण और व्यास प्रणीत महाभारत का है. इन दो ग्रन्थों में भारतीय संस्कृति के विकास का व्यापक इतिहास सुरक्षित है. इन ग्रन्थों ने क्रमशः यूरोप और भारत में न मालूम कितने व्यक्तियों के जीवन में चमत्कारी परिवर्तन किए हैं. ये ग्रन्थ अतीत के सन्दर्भ में वर्तमान को निष्ठापूर्वक जीने की और उत्साहपूर्वक उज्ज्वल भविष्य के निर्माण की सशक्त प्रेरणा प्राप्त करते हैं. हमारे उदीयमान नागरिक यदि इनमें किसी भी ग्रन्थ का अनुशीलन करेंगे, तो उन्हें जीवन में निराशा एवं अकर्मण्यता का कभी बोध नहीं हो सकेगा.
श्रेष्ठ ग्रन्थों की यह स्वाभाविक विशेषता होती है कि वे अनेक पाठकों के जीवन की शैली को बदलते देखे गए हैं. वीर सावरकर
की जीवनगाथा ने न मालूम कितने युवकों को देश पर मर मिटने की तथा सर्वस्व बलिदान कर देने की प्रेरणा प्रदान की थी. सुभद्रा कुमारी चौहान कृत ‘झाँसी की रानी’ को पढ़कर अनेक महिलाएं भारत के स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम में भाग लेने के लिए घर की चार दीवारों के बाहर आ गई थीं.
द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध के अनेक युद्धबंदियों ने जेलों अथवा बेगारी कैम्पों से बाहर आने के बाद बताया कि उन्होंने तन्हाई और तकलीफ के दिन श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता के सहारे काटे थे. छोटे आकार की गीता की पुस्तक वे किसी प्रकार छिपा कर अपने पास रखते थे और अवसर मिलने पर एकांत में उसे पढ़कर मानसिक शान्ति एवं आत्मिक बल प्राप्त करते थे.
सोलोमन एवं सिकन्दर जैसे व्यक्ति जीवन में सब कुछ प्राप्त करने के बाद ग्रन्थों को पढ़ने के उपरान्त ही अपने द्वारा किए गए पापों के लिए प्रायश्चित करने को विवश हुए थे. हम चाहते हैं कि हमारे युवक-युवतियाँ श्रेष्ठ ग्रन्थों का अध्ययन-मनन करें. इनसे उन्हें नई जानकारियाँ तो प्राप्त होंगी ही, जीवन को आशावादी बनाने की प्रेरणा भी प्राप्त होगी तथा नकल करके भ्रष्टाचार आदि के मार्ग अपनाकर, अनुचित साधन अपनाकर सफलता प्राप्त करने की पद्धति के प्रति उनके मन में वितृष्णा उत्पन्न हो जाएगी अधर्म से अन्ततः निवृत्ति तो होती ही है.
इस सन्दर्भ में बहुत महत्व की बात कही है एच. डब्ल्यू. ग्रोस्ट (H. W. Grost) ने कि अच्छी पुस्तकों से पाप से सुरक्षा होती है (In good books is one of the best safeguards from evil) आप श्रेष्ठ पुस्तकें पढ़िए और उनमें उपलब्ध ज्ञान को आत्मसात् कीजिए, आपके सम्मुख सफलता का मार्ग प्रशस्त हो जाएगा, साथ ही, आपके मन में यह धारणा बद्धमूल हो जाएगी कि श्रेष्ठ उद्देश्य की प्राप्ति श्रेष्ठ साधनों द्वारा ही प्राप्त होती है और वह स्थायी होती है. तब सिकन्दर की भाँति जीवन में पश्चाताप करने की आवश्यकता आपको नहीं पडेगी. मार्टिन फर्खुहार ट्यूपर (Martin Farquhar Tupper) का कथन आपको आत्मसात् कर लेना चाहिए – A good book is the best of friends, the same today and forever. अर्थात् एक अच्छी किताब सर्वोत्तम मित्र है, आज थी और सदा के लिए अच्छी पुस्तक
का चयन करते समय इस सामान्य नियम को ध्यान में रखिए – Never read a book that is not an year old. ऐसी पुस्तक को कभी मत पढो जो कम-से-कम एक वर्ष पुरानी न हो जहाँ तक
सम्भव हो तात्कालिक पुस्तकें न पढ़ें, केवल सर्वकालिक पुस्तकें पढ़ें. सर्वकालिक पुस्तकें युगों के थपेड़े सहती हुईं सदैव प्रासंगिक बनी रहती हैं. ऐसी पुस्तकें आपको ऐसी दिशा प्रदान करेंगी जिसमें असफलता के लिए कोई स्थान होता ही नहीं है. अच्छी पुस्तकों के विषय में महात्मा गांधी का कथन ध्यान देने हमें अपने मित्रों के साथ न रहने की कमी योग्य है-” अच्छी पुस्तकों के पास होने से नहीं खटकती. जितना ही मैं पुस्तकों का विशेषताएं मालूम होती जाती हैं.” अध्ययन करता हूँ, उतनी ही अधिक उनकी
यह तो आप भी स्वीकार करेंगे कि हमें जो
कुछ भी जानकारी प्राप्त होती है, हमारा जितना भी ज्ञानवर्धन होता है, सब कुछ पुस्तकों के माध्यम से आवश्यकता यह है कि हम अच्छी पुस्तकों का चयन करें तथा सिकन्दर महान् की भाँति पुस्तकों को समस्त धन-सम्पत्ति की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ वस्तु समझें. वाल्टेयर ने एक बार अपने जीवन के अनुभव सुनाते हुए कहा था कि ” असभ्य राष्ट्रों को छोड़कर शेष सम्पूर्ण विश्व पर पुस्तकों का शासन है.” इसका तात्पर्य है कि श्रेष्ठ पुस्तकें समाज के सभ्य होने का प्रमाण हैं तथा श्रेष्ठ पुस्तक / पुस्तकों के प्रति आदरभाव रखने वाला व्यक्ति सही अर्थ में सभ्य माना जाता है. लोहे की विजय ने सिकन्दर को विश्व विजेता बनाया और रत्न जड़ित मंजूषा में श्रेष्ठ ग्रन्थ रखने के कारण उसको महान ज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ.
आप एक तथ्य को भली प्रकार समझ लें कि श्रेष्ठ पुस्तकें यदि अन्तःकरण, मन, लिए साबुन का काम करती हैं, तो बुरी चित्त और बुद्धि को निर्मल करती हैं, मन के
पुस्तकों का पठन विषपान के समान है. ने लिखा है कि ” पुस्तकें मानव की शाश्वत श्रेष्ठ पुस्तकों को लक्ष्य करके एक विचारक
संगिनी हैं सद्ग्रंथ और प्रेरक पुस्तकें मनुष्य को सन्मार्ग पर आरूढ करती हैं तथा उसकी निराशा को आशा में परिणत करती हैं.” आप श्रेष्ठ पुस्तकें पढ़ते रहिए, आपको जीवन में कभी निराश एवं हतोत्साहित होने का अवसर नहीं आएगा. निरन्तर प्रयत्न करते रहने के फलस्वरूप किसी को सफलता न मिले – ऐसी बात समझ में नहीं आनी चाहिए.
